IDB’s Commitment to Open-Source Software

Code for Development offers more than 200 open-source tools designed to support the modernization of public management in Latin America and the Caribbean.

We continually expand our repository through the development of new software, the curation of tested solutions and the support of governments when opening their own tools. Furthermore, we promote the adoption of these solutions through monthly meetings, articles and pilot projects aimed at public servants, academics and actors in the GovTechs ecosystem. In this way, we drive innovation, improve efficiency and promote sustainability in the public sector.

Open-Source Software for Governments

As a pioneer in open-source investment among multilateral institutions and a member of the Digital Public Goods Alliance, the IDB believes open source can maximize public-investment impact by granting governments full ownership and control over their code. Agencies reduce license costs, become more agile in responding to change, scale up reuse across departments and collaborate with a global developer network. Likewise, GovTechs can integrate these tools into their portfolios, support governments in adopting them, and decrease development costs. This approach also boosts transparency, trust, interoperability, and regional integration.

Open Source Software Procurement

This IDB technical note summarizes the principles and best practices for procuring open source software. It proposes how to design processes that attract specialized implementers and strengthen a sustainable support ecosystem.
