X-Road

X-Road is a platform that facilitates the exchange of data between information systems in a secure and standardized way. It acts as a distributed layer that allows different entities to share and access services efficiently, guaranteeing the integrity and confidentiality of the information. This tool has been designed to promote collaboration and data exchange between public entities, companies and civil society. Being a common digital good, its use is free and accessible to any organization interested in improving its services through the secure exchange of data, as has been demonstrated in projects such as the piloting of digital recipes in Germany.
The problem that X-Road addresses is the complexity and inefficiency of digital service delivery across different entities, such as government agencies, businesses, and citizens. Traditionally, each cross-organization service integration requires a separate connection, leading to a vast, unmanageable network of interfaces that is expensive, error-prone, and a nightmare to maintain. Additionally, ensuring data security and privacy across these numerous connections presents a significant challenge.
Streamlines interoperability between government agencies, businesses, and citizens by providing a standardized data exchange layer. Enhances service delivery efficiency, leading to cost savings and improved user satisfaction. Ensures compliance with international data security and privacy standards, mitigating risk. Facilitates seamless integration of services, allowing for scalability and technological innovation. Reduces infrastructure redundancy, leading to a reduction in both capital expenditure and operational costs.
Utilizes API and SOAP RESTFUL for web services, along with XML and JSON for data exchange. Adopts HTTP/HTTPS for web communication and security protocols such as TLS/SSL, WS-Security, and PKI for secure data transmission. Implements OAuth 2.0, JWT, and SAML for user authentication and authorization. Incorporates OpenID Connect for reliable identity verification. Complies with ISO/IEC standards for security management and uses Docker and Kubernetes for scalable deployment.
